A Camper’s Tale

April 10th, 2009

When camping, I personally gravitate between the two spectrums of campers.  I can’t feel comfortable pioneer camping by myself because I lack both experience and the grit, but I also don’t see the point in camping if you have every single comfort of home.  The whole point is separating from the day-to-day stresses.  I prefer the watered down version of nature presented by state-run campgrounds.

My job requires me to spend long stretches of the day in the woods by myself, so I have become rather proficient at holding my bladder and, when the need arises, finding cover to “water the foliage,” so to speak.  Camping in a campground doesn’t really lend itself to this sort of behavior.

I came to a realization about two things: children can’t hold their bladders like adults can and they don’t like going to the bathroom in the woods.  Thankfully, my nieces’ parents are far more intelligent than me when it comes to children and their bathroom habits.

They had thought to bring a portable outdoor toilet on our trip!  I had originally complained, but no longer!  Problem wonderfully and brilliantly solved, correct?  Oh, how wrong one person can be.  The most important thing to remember about outdoor toilets is to remember to bring toilet paper from home!
