Our family goes on an annual camping trip to the Appalachians every May. We usually bring along the basics hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwich meat, bread, veggies, milk and eggs. Our kids are big on fishing so we always have a fresh catch for either lunch or dinner. S’mores are the favorite dessert but we also do baked apples and brownies.
There are some essentials needed to make sure you have the best and easiest to prepare meals while camping. Don’t forget to bring a good cast iron skillet. It may be heavy but there’s no substitute, especially for fresh fish. You’ll need the standard utensils, knives, forks, spoons and spatulas. Bring along two or three metal mixing bowls for omelets, fish batter if you’re going to fry, and to use for serving. We use plastic reusable plates and cups and each person’s is color coded. Other food prep essentials include tin foil, plastic wrap, and Tupperware. Lastly, your best friend on the camp site will be a sturdy cooler. Depending on the size of your family, how many things you bring along that are perishable and how long you plan to be gone will determine how big of a cooler you’ll need. All of these items will ensure that your meals are the enjoyable family experience you want them to be!
